A Day in the Life Of....

I often get asked how I get it all done.  I’m a work-at-home, homeschooling mom whose husband is away from home a lot, I cook three meals a day, and I’m recovering from a serious illness.  So I thought I’d give you a peak into what an ‘average’ weekday looks like for us when my husband is gone.  I get more work on the business done when my husband is home since he takes over some of the household tasks, and on weekends when I don’t do chores or school and instead that time is devoted to the business.  Also, I rarely run errands, as it requires having someone else drive.  My husband does the grocery shopping and most of the errands while he’s out for his job.

For the time slots I work, I have set items I accomplish on certain days.  I also pop onto the computer and do a little work if I have a few minutes while something is cooking or I’m waiting on something.  I have a laptop, so it follows me around.  If I have time left over after a block, I push the schedule forward and spend the extra time working on the business.   Some of the working slots include time in the kitchen and the clean-up from that gets combined with the regular kitchen clean-up.  I also almost always cook a test meal for our own nightly meal, which is more time spent on my job.  All told, I spend no less than 6 hours a day working, and 2 hours on school.  My oldest will be able to start kindergarten next year, and I expect to spend more time on school at that point.

For housework, almost all household tasks have a weekly slot, ala Flylady.  You’ll also notice my children help with housework and kitchen work.  My daughter will be 5 in October, and she’s already a big help in housework and cooking.  My son, who will be 3 in November, often comes and goes between the living room or play room and where we’re working.  He’ll soon be old enough to learn how to give profitable help.  For now, I encourage his help even if it takes more me time.  Him learning to love work is more important than me taking extra time with a chore.
